… Yet when we at EM Staffordshire began to campaign for the UK to rejoin the Erasmus+ programme we got little traction with members of the public. Many people thought it was a scheme for middle class university students to go on foreign jollies at tax payers' expense and leaving it was no loss for the likes of them. Who could blame them? That was the general message from the media and politicians.
But it was completely wrong. Now many more people know that Boris Johnson had pulled the plug on UK participation in a programme that in reality had been providing international learning and development experiences for people of all ages from all walks of life, many who could never have afforded it otherwise.
The good news is that the UK has rejoined Erasmus+, at least for the last year of the 2021-2027 programme.
All the opportunities are back. Its up to everyone now to make it a success; to grab the opportunities with both hands and encourage the organisations we are associated with to take part.
Erasmus+ is for everyone. Everyone reading this can do their bit to show the government we want to be part of it, not just next year, but every year.
